Online Poker: Let's Talk Poker
Every game in a virtual gambling site has its own set of terminologies. Just like in an online poker game, learning how to talk shop is recommended to help you know your way around.
If it's your first time to deal with these matters, we highly suggest that you read through some of the usual terms, from A to D and other (general) terms, that are presented here so that you won't have any trouble in getting ahead within the online poker environment.
Some of the Common Words: To make it easier, let's take one beginning letter of the word at a time. Let's start with A.
• All In If you will use this term, you have to remember that it means "placing or putting all your cash in."
• Ante This refers to a small bet that should be (initially) paid for by all the players at the table before each hand.
Going on to letter B…
• Bankroll This is the amount of money that you use for gambling or the money that you are willing to take a risk for.
• Belly Buster This term means "an inside straight draw" that is made during the play session.
Moving on to C…
• Call When you make a call on a bet, it means that you are willing to equal the odds, but not necessarily raise it.
• Case Money This is the amount of cash that is used for emergencies.
Now, it's D…
• Drop We hope that this term wouldn't happen to you. This refers to the amount of money that you've lost in the game.
• Down to the Felt If you are down to the felt, this means that you have gone bankrupt or broke.
Other Terms in General: • Fold Fold means to pass your hand.
• Live Card Contrary to the word "live" that may be associated in real life to something that's real and seen, a live card in poker means a particular card that was not shown or hasn't been seen by the players.
• The Nuts This is the best hand that you can muster - given the expert techniques you used.
• Rag This is a card with low value that has no reference or impact on the hand or bet that you had placed.
• Raise When you decide to "raise" in this game, you allow the increase of a bet that was done previously.
• Trips Trips refer to a set of three cards bearing the similar rank.
• White Meat This term means the "profit" that you have gained.
Gathering information about the common terminologies used in an online poker site can make the difference. So, memorize them if you must, and use them if you will - to show that you're a very good greenhorn who knows the language of this type of gambling just like a pro.
